Controversial bollard damaged at town centre junction

One of the bollards erection to mark the closing off of a town centre junction has been knocked over.

Kildare County Council decided to close the Basin Street/Abbey Street intersection in Naas for reasons surrounding pedestrian safety.

It is one of a number of measures taken recently to enhance safety for vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists.

However, some local councillors have criticised the decision.

Access to both streets is still available for vehicles - but it is no longer possible to enter Abbey Street from Basin Street or vice versa.

It's understood the incident took place earlier this week and during daylight hours. Its thought a large SUV-type vehicle collided with the structure and there was debris on the roadway afterwards.

It's also understood the matter has been reported to the gardaí
