Fianna Fáil euro election hopeful Barry Cowen spent a day with his campaign team canvassing support in Naas for the forthcoming European Parliament poll.

During his visit he met students at St Mary’s College as well as members of the Naas Men’s Shed. He also called  on local businesses including Kerry, Dawn Farms and Irish Dog Foods and also took  in MERITS, the innovation thinkspace hub adjacent to Aras Chill Dara.

The Offaly TD is seeking a seat to represent the Midlands-North-West constituency, which he described as vast taking in, as it does, Donegal and Kildare and a good many counties in between.

He was accompanied by Sinead Ronan chief executive of County Kildare Chamber, Carbury farmer and former IFA deputy president Brian Rushe  and Deputy James Lawless for a question and answer session at Lawlors’s Hotel where some 40 people filled the room, with a decent representation of farmers.

Mr Cowen also stressed the importance of the tech sector to Ireland and expressed concern that data centres are being established in countries like Sweden and Norway because this sector is not important - not just for the jobs created but the taxes raised pay for public services.

Deputy James Lawless warned that the sector is volatile and there is always the possibility of a downturn as happened twenty years ago.

Mr Cowen also said that people who cannot afford to retrofit their homes to reduce carbon production should be assisted to do so and he also encouraged the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil, a renewable diesel made from waste plant material, which cuts carbon emissions by 86%.
