Fears have been expressed over the possible presence of leachate or gas at a soon-to-be opened sports and recreation facility near Naas.

Green Party councillor Bob Quinn asked at a Naas Municipal District meeting if “there are issues with leachate and gas that are not being shared with us.”

The councillor didn’t get a verbal response and he pointed out that the facility was due to open last October and has cost €61m.

Cllr Quinn was told in a written report that there is a contract date for completion of construction set for April 2025 and the project is at the final stages of development and remains ahead of the original schedule.

According to the report the landfill infrastructure element of the works is currently in the final stages with snagging and commissioning works currently taking place on site.

“It is expected that ‘substantial completion’ of these works will be reached in the coming weeks. At that stage, full running of the park and ongoing landfill management, will move from the contractor  to Kildare County Council, which can then carry out final preparations for the park to open to the public.

Kerdiffstown Park is a development of sports pitches and walking routes along with floodlighting.
