Beekeeper Colm O'Neill at Russborough House, Wicklow
The North Kildare Bee Keepers Association, founded in 1961, will start its annual beekeeping course on Tuesday March 5 (8pm).
The group exists to educate and support beekeepers in Kildare and the surrounding counties. The association is run by volunteers and the beekeeping course takes place every year.
It runs until Tuesday May 14 with classes taking place every Tuesday and will take place at the old Dara Cinema, North Main Street, Naas.
In order to take part, participants must be members of the NKBKA and this costs €35 for twelve months.
The course is included in the membership and those wishing to join are asked to log on to www.nkbka and click on “become a member”. Information about the course is on the website under “education”.
During the year demonstrations and visits are hosted at apiaries and these are led by the group’s most experienced members.
The membership fee pays for this along with monthly talks throughout the year.
It’s possible to do the course via Zoom, though face to face attendance is “always better because the connections you make with experienced beekeepers will be invaluable.”
Prospective members are advised against buying any beekeeping equipment “until they have a face-to-face with a colony of bees.”
They can also be contacted on www.facebook.com/northkildarebees/
