A section of greenway - which would cater for walkers and cyclists - should be built alongside a section of the Grand Canal in Naas.

Local councillor Bill Clear has called for a feasibility study to be carried out on the Corbally Line, which starts at the canal harbour, passes beneath the Naas Newbridge Road and continues on towards Jigginstown.

He said it could provide links to the Newbridge and Kilcullen “along the River Liffey.”

Another Naas councillor, Seamie Moore, is seeking support from fellow councillors to “support the vision of being able to use the almost nine kilometres long canal route for future boating and water sports, in tandem with walking and cycling facilities.”

Cllr Moore said this could be done in conjunction with moves  to enhance the canal harbour area with “a water sports hub.”

According to Kildare County Council it is open to investigating the feasibility of enhancing the development potential of the route and consultants will be appointed to do this this year.
