Santa comes to Sallins

Asylum seekers could be on the way to Sallins.

According to Fianna Fáil TD James Lawless, the Waterways Hotel in Sallins has been offered to the government.

The offer was made through a request for tender for "Bespoke Panel  Agreement for the Provision of Accommodation Services and Related Services for Persons Seeking International Protection" which was published by the government in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The Department is now in the process of signing a contract with the tenderer, according to the TD.

Deputy Lawless received this information on September 11 in response to a parliamentary question to Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O'Gorman. He then shared it on to his constituents in his newsletter.

Dep Lawless also said the property will “be providing 56 double and twin rooms.”

He added: “It is expected that this property will be available for occupation, following carrying out of mobilisation works, by year end.”

He said he was  advised by  the minister some months ago that there were no sites in Sallins under consideration

“However an application has now been made by a local property owner, to develop such a facility.”

People seeking protection from the brutal invasion by Russia are described as Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection in order to claim supports.

However this differs from “international protection” which is governed by international agreements in place since the 1950s whereby countries assess and grant asylum.
