Darren Donohue, an award winning playwright and poet from Newbridge has been selected to showcase his latest play in Barcelona this summer.
His play called ‘Dayshift’ was selected to represent Ireland at the Festival in Spain for countries most affected by the economic crisis.
“The play had to address this issue,” said Darren who comes from Standhouse Road. “There was an international call out for plays from the countries most affected which are Portual, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain.”
Darren’s play charts the flagging career of Mr Dan who has just joined a multi-national company but all is not as it would seem due to the economic crash.
His first play, Revelations - received a Stewart Parker Award nomination. In 2010, he was invited onto the New Playwrights Programme at The Abbey Theatre and shortlisted for a Hennessy Literary Award. In 2012, his play Tuesday Evening was selected from over 1,600 submissions by Fishamble and produced as part of Tiny Plays for Ireland.
“I have been writing plays for 20 years,” he added.
“I love it and it is my bread and butter. You have to be brave to work as a playwrite but I love it and it comes very natural to me. This is going to be amazing - it is a highly prestigious event and it is great to be going.”
