Gardaí have issued a warning to motorists after significant snowfall in the Wicklow Mountains.

Gardai say snow is accumulating on the road from Sally Gap Cross towards Glencree.

Warning signs are now being placed on all approach roads to the Sally Gap.

A five-day Status Yellow snow-ice warning for Ireland was issued on Monday morning ahead of what the forecaster will be a very cold week. The weather warning is valid until Saturday, February 2 at 12:00.

According to Met Eireann, it will be very cold this week with showers of hail, sleet and snow, frequent across the southwest, west and north, where some significant accumulations are possible this evening and overnight. There will be widespread frost with icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

There is the potential for further significant snowfall in places on Thursday.
