A 23 year old man who initially failed to pay a taxi fare of €520 appeared before Naas District Count.

The man appeared by videolink because he is in custody and he told Judge Desmond Zaidan “I was out of my mind on drugs.”

The defendant Reece Murphy, whose address was given as Pluckerstown, Kilmeague, Allen was and he was prosecuted for a breach of the Theft and Fraud Offences Act.

Sgt Dave Hanrahan said the incident occurred on January 26, 2025 at Kildare train station. The court also heard that the defendant had made full admission and he had paid back most of the money.

Noting that the defendant was under the influence of drugs, Judge Zaidan commented that taxi drivers must be aware if potential passengers are under the influence of an intoxicant before embarking on a journey.

The judge imposed a three month sentence which he backdated and he said this means that the defendant will not spend any additional time in custody.
