Two of the people who died in tragic weekend road accidents lived in Naas and were involved in the GAA locally.

The man and woman,  who were both aged in their 40s, lost their lives in a road crash involving a van and a car on Saturday.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 12pm.

The accident took place on the route between Tramore and Waterford city about two miles from the city.

The two people who died were in the car and their bodies were later removed to University Hospital Waterford, for post-mortem examinations to be carried out.

The driver of the van, a man aged in his 50s, and a boy, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to University Hospital Waterford with injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

Garda forensic collision investigators completed a technical examination of the scene and the road was closed for a time.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 11.45am and 12.15pm are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

It is understood the family were resident in the Naas area and their children played hurling for Naas and football with neighbouring Eadestown, while the father was involved as a hurling coach in Naas GAA.
