As part of ongoing enforcement to keep our communities safe, Naas RPU seized four illegal high-powered e-scooters on Kilcullen Road, Naas, Co Kildare this week.
ALL riders were under 18 years of age.
Parents were contacted to collect their children.
Youths will be dealt with under the Youth Diversion Scheme.
A garda spokesperson stated : “Let’s be absolutely clear: These e-scooters are illegal. They do not comply with current legislation. They are high-powered machines capable of serious speed and serious injury.”
As of May 2024, e-scooters are legal on Irish public roads for users aged 16+.
However, they must have a maximum speed of 20km/h, a power output of 400W or less, and weigh <=25kg.
Parents have been cautioned not to buy a high-powered e-scooters for their children, and have been advised that riders must be over sixteen years of age.
The garda spokesperson added: “If your child has one (an illegal e-scooter) - take it away. This is not a toy. This is a powerful piece of equipment that puts young lives, pedestrians, and road users at real risk.
“Enforcement will continue. Safety comes first.”
