Works have commenced on a €1.8m school extension to Newtown National School, Newtown, Co Kildare.

According to Construction Information Services (CIS), works were on site as of February 4 2026.

CIS notes that a main contractor was appointed on January 27 2026, at which stage works were expected to commence “in the next six weeks.”

A decision to grant planning permission was issued by Kildare County Council on 08/03/2024 to Newtown National School for the provision of a single storey extension to the rear of existing single storey school building (existing floor area = 610sqm).

This consisted of a two classroom special education unit, a set room and a plant room (floor area of proposed extension = 463sqm).

Also planned was a secure external soft play area, minor internal alterations and elevational amendments and all ancillary site development works.

The architect for the project is McLoughlin Architecture, and the main contractor is Debcon Engineering & Construction Limited.

The estimated completion date for the project is November 3 2026.
