The late Vivian Carroll
There is shock and sadness in Newbridge and across Co Kildare this morning at the news that well-known businessman Vivian Carroll passed away suddenly last night.
The owner of Judge Roy Beans and Harrigan's Bar & Grill in Newbridge was a hugely popular figure and who was a big supporter of the local community.
He gave employment to many people during his career and had many loyal customers who returned again and again.
He is survived by his wife Breda and four children.
Judge Roy Beans said it will be closed until further notice.
Senator Fiona O'Loughlin said:
"So desperately sad to hear last night of the untimely passing of Vivian Carroll - whom I have literally known all my life.
"A fellow Rathanganite, one of the most decent, nicest people I ever had the privilege of knowing.
"Starting out in the Silken Thomas, he became a master of his trade and went on to buy Judge Roy Beans and Harrigan's Bar & Grill. Vivian loved hospitality and people. He was kind and generous, always supportive of local endeavours.
"Such a proud Dad, always chatting about Breda and his four children. Vivian was also a great son to Celia and brother to Michelle and Paddy- who have all known to much grief in their lives.
"We are all the better for having known him, and all the poorer for his loss. Very deepest sympathy to family, friends and community.
The Newbridge Community Forum Facebook page said that Newbridge is a more sombre place this morning, in shock and in unanimous grief in support of Vivian's wife and four children.
The Forum said: " We would like to extend our sincerest sympathies and condolences on the sudden loss of our friend Vivian Carroll .
Extending our love at this time to Breda and his four children who will now need the support of friends and the wider community who were treated like family always in Judge Roy beans and Harrigans.
"A warm smile, greeting and accommodating your every need in the restaurant, A charitable community man and a huge supporter of Newbridge Mens Shed, Football Clubs and local committees and Youth Clubs . He supported all our business endeavours on this page including March Madness, of which he was an anchor donor. We will forever miss your cheeky welcoming smile."
In addition, the owners of the Mani in Pasta branch of Newbridge have paid tribute to the late Vivian Carroll.
The business' tribute read as follows: "All of us at Mani in Pasta are deeply saddened by the passing of Vivian Carroll. Our hearts go out to you and your family during this incredibly difficult time.
"Vivian will be remembered with great warmth and respect, and his presence will be truly missed by all who knew him.
"We hope that the love, memories, and support surrounding you may bring some comfort and strength in the days ahead.
"Please know that you are in our thoughts."
"With heartfelt sympathy, Paco , Mersia and Mani in Pasta Team," the business concluded.
Cllr Chris Pender said: "Vivian was one of those people you could never just walk past. There was always a joke. Always a bit of slagging. You could have constant banter with him and pick up where you left off. But just as quickly, you would find yourself in a proper conversation about the town, about business, about how things were going. He cared deeply about his work and he cared deeply about Newbridge.
"I even worked for him for a short time, so I saw that side of him up close. He had high standards. He took pride in what he built. But he also looked after people. He wanted the place busy, welcoming, and part of the life of the town.
Judge Roy Beans and Harrigan’s were more than businesses to him. They were part of the fabric of Newbridge. He backed local clubs, youth groups, Men’s Shed, fundraisers, and countless community efforts. If something was happening locally, Vivian was usually there to support it.
"Most of all, he was so proud of Breda and his four children. He spoke about them often. They were everything to him.
Kildangan GAA said: "All at Kildangan GAA wishes to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Vivian Carroll on his sudden passing. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife Breda and their four children Sadhbh, Christian, Roan and Elliot, Mother in law Bridie, extended Carroll and Kenny families at this very sad and difficult time.
"Vivian was a generous and kind community person who was always a great supporter of Kildangan GAA and community events. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him."
