A judge refused legal aid in the case of a Kildare man who was arrested after urinating on a wall in Portlaoise.
Evas Chenga (36) of Bell Harbour, Monasterevin, Co Kildare admitted being intoxicated in public at Church Avenue, Portlaoise, on January 3, 2026.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was observed “urinating against a wall” while highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet.
He said the man was arrested for his own safety. He said the man had 18 previous convictions.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was pleading guilty to the offence.
“He drank to excess on the night in question and he totally accepts that,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.
She said he had undertaken a three month residential treatment programme and his most recent previous offence had been in 2023.
She said he “apologises for being a nuisance on the night” he came to Garda attention. She said he had secured work as general operative and was due to start that day.
Judge Susan Fay fined the man €400 and gave him three months to pay.
Ms Fitzpatrick requested legal aid and Judge Fay declined the request.
