Callum Bolton and Michael Spillane were the Kildare faces in the starting XV as last year's losing Sigerson Cup finalists UCD were beaten by a late University of Galway two-pointer from Shane McGrath.
The Galway side edged this game 0-15 to 0-14 in a game that was slow to take off with no score until the ninth minute. When it did get going, things were in UCD's favour and, led by Mayo’s Niall Hurley, they went in at half-time 0-9 to 0-3 to the good.
The route back into this game for the Galway side was two-pointers and, after going seven behind thanks to a Ben O'Carroll point, they flipped this game on its head and got the game's next five scores, three of which came from outside the arc.
It was nip and tuck down the home stretch with that final two-pointer from wing-forward Shane McGrath, his only score of the day, enough to send University of Galway into a semi-final.
Both Kildare men completed the full 63 minutes of action and will now turn their attention to the weekend and The Lilies' second Allianz Football League Division 2 game against Offaly in Cedral St Conleth's Park.
