Members of Naas Roads Policing Unit (#NaasRPU) recently stopped a vehicle on Barberstown Roundabout in Co Kildare that failed to yield on the roundabout.

During the stop, it was discovered that the driver was an unaccompanied learner permit holder.

An oral fluid drug test was carried out and returned positive for cannabis.

The driver was arrested for drug driving, and the vehicle was seized. The learner driver now faces a period of disqualification from driving.

According to An Garda Síochána Kildare, driving under the influence of drugs seriously affects:

  • Reaction times

  • Judgement and decision-making

  • Awareness of other road users

A Garda spokesperson noted: “Even small amounts of drugs can make driving dangerous. Drug driving puts drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users at risk.

“Never drive after taking drugs – legal or illegal.

“Learner drivers must be accompanied at all times. If you feel unfit to drive, don’t drive. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe.”
