There are concerns that one bridge in County Kildare poses a hazard to drivers.
The structure was brought to the attention of Kildare County Council (KCC) by two separate councillors at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Wednesday, January 21 last.
Specifically, the matter was raised by Fine Gael Cllr Kevin Duffy, who motioned for KCC to "install appropriate warning signs at Coughlan’s Lock on the R424 Monasterevin–Portarlington Road, as the humpback bridge poses a hazard to drivers who are unaware of its presence".
His motion, which was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, was taken alongside a question which was submitted by Social Democrats Cllr Pat Balfe.
Cllr Balfe's question to KCC read as follows: "Can the council provide an update on the motion submitted in March 2025 concerning proposed works to the approaches of the hump-backed bridge on the R424 Monasterevin–Portarlington Road?"
Replying to Cllr Duffy's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The MD Office will review the area and install a humpback bridge sign at suitable locations."
And in response to Cllr Balfe's question, KCC said via its report: "The MD Office will progress the proposed road markings and
signage at this location in the 2026 works programme."
Cllr Duffy subsequently told KCC that he welcomed the response to his motion.
