More funding needs to be provided to help organisations like Naas GAA club to cater for the needs of the membership.

A Kildare County Council meeting was briefed on the funding and mechanisms that are available following a request from independent councillor Seamie Moore.

Hwe asked KCC it to identify revenue sources “are available for towns in excess of a 20,000 population “which are experiencing significant population growth and have shortfalls in their social, amenity, community and sport infrastructure.”

He said there is a need to support “the development and provision of these essential facilities to address the shortfall.”

He also said funding would “enhance community well-being and help mitigate anti-social behaviour.”

He said Naas GAA club has a membership of 4,000 and some 2,000-2,500 are players but their grounds are inadequate for the level of demand.

He added that players cannot “get on to teams” - such is the pressure of numbers and space.
