“There is only one playground for a population of 20,000 people,” Cllr Rupert Heather told a Celbridge Leixlip Municipal District meeting.

He said a playground/MUGA should be incorporated in the construction of a new road, pedestrian footpaths, and cycle lanes as part of an active travel corridor known in Celbridge-Hazelhatch.

And he called for an assessment of “any suitable council-controlled or project-acquired land along the route that offers natural passive surveillance.”

He added: “We need recreation areas in Celbridge.”

Kildare County Council said the active travel corridor proposal has been submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála for planning consent and to facilitate the compulsory purchase of land required for it.

It added it’s not possible to include a MUGA or a playground at this time “as the application has already been lodged.”

However, KCC also said that the request could be considered as part of a “master planning process” for lands in the area.

KCC official Simon Wallace said an effort will be made to progress this during 2026.
