Kildare South Fine Gael TD and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon has welcomed confirmation that 11,490 people in Kildare have benefitted from the rent tax credit, and the numbers continue to grow since it was introduced.

Minister Heydon said: “It’s really positive to see that renters in Kildare are availing of their tax credit, which is putting money back in people’s pocket. However, it is also clear that many haven’t made their claim for 2025 yet.”

Figures provided from the Department of Finance show that while 11,490 claimed their renters tax credit in 2024, only 3,340 Kildare renters have made their claim in 2025 so far.

“I strongly encourage those eligible who haven’t claimed their rent tax credit for 2025 to do so and apply so they don’t miss out on the valuable support,” said Minister Heydon.

Revenue says it does expect the numbers to rise in the coming months as most claims for credits by PAYE taxpayers take place after the year-end, and it is expected that the bulk of claims for 2025 will not be made until 2026.

The Rent Tax Credit has been available for tax years since 2022 and is worth a maximum of €1,000 euro to renters, while for jointly assessed married couples or civil partners it is worth up to €2,000.

Minister Heydon concluded by saying: “No renter should leave this money behind. The process to apply is simple and puts money back into renters’ pockets.”
