Kildare County Council (KCC) was told by a local councillor that the installation of a pedestrian crossing at one Kildare cemetery should be treated "as a priority".
The comments were made by Independent Cllr Tom McDonnell at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which took place on Wednesday, November 19 last.
At this meeting, he motioned for KCC to install a pedestrian crossing at Newbridge Cemetery (specifically on a section of the Athgarvan Road located near the cemetery) in order to provide access to the car park.
His motion was seconded by the Mayor of the MD, Fianna Fáil Cllr Noel Heavey.
Responding to Cllr McDonnell's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The request has been added to a list of similar type requests in the county and shall be assessed when resources become available.
"An assessment will then be carried out by KCC's Traffic Management Centre in conjunction with the MD Engineers to determine the feasibility and suitability of providing a pedestrian crossing at this location."
KCC added: "Subject to the findings of this assessment, an appropriate type of pedestrian crossing solution will be proposed, subject to funding being available."
Speaking further on his motion, Cllr McDonnell stressed to KCC that the matter should be treated "as a priority, for the sake of children and the elderly".
Mayor Heavey echoed similar sentiments, and told KCC: "People can be crossing the road [near the cemetery] and not be all that mindful [of their surroundings] if they are grieving."
"I agree that it should be a priority", he added.
