A road safety audit has been sought for a junction located in County Kildare.

The request was made by Fine Gael councillor Peggy O'Dwyer at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which took place on Wednesday, November 19 last.

While in attendance at this meeting, she motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to complete a road safety audit "prior to opening the road access from the Milltown Road through Station Walk in Newbridge".

Her motion was seconded by her party colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

In response to Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The road access from the Milltown Road through Station Walk has been constructed by the developer of the Station Walk development under the granted planning permission for that development.

"An independent Stage 3 Road Safety Audit has been undertaken on behalf of the developer at this location."

KCC added: "The developer is in the process of addressing the items raised in the audit prior to the opening of the access in the coming weeks."

Following this, Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer asked KCC if there were "any significant findings" from the audit.

Replying to her query, a representative of KCC who was present at the meeting told her: "The main finding was that there is a need for a raised table at the junction going through the estate."

They added that the junction "should be open this side of Christmas".

However, Cllr O'Dwyer still had reservations about this decision, and told the representative: "Have you seen the opening?"

Speaking to the Leinster Leader following the meeting, Cllr O'Dwyer emphasised: "Once the estate's taken in charge process is completed, KCC will be in a position to review [the region] if necessary."
