BREAKING: Kildare manslaughter accused is to seek bail

Naas Courthouse

An 18 year old man from Kildare town who is accused of manslaughter is to seek bail next week.

Ryan Murphy, 18, whose address was given as Curragh Plains, on the outskirts of the town is being prosecuted for the alleged manslaughter of Ryan Weir Gibbons in Kildare town last month.

Mr Weir Gibbons, of Connagh Green, Cooleaghknock Glebe, Kildare town, passed away in hospital a few days after being found unresponsive at Magee Terrace,  Dublin Road, on 26 October.

Detective Sergeant Pat Dunne told a previous court that he arrested the accused in his family home this morning.

Mr Murphy appeared at Naas District Court via videolink today in what was his second appearance.

Sgt Ruth Coleman told Judge Desmond Zaidan that she was seeking an adjournment “for full directions" from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Sgt Coleman also said the results of a post mortem examination would not be available for approximately 14 weeks.

Mr Murphy spoke only briefly to acknowledge his solicitor David Powderly and he replied “yeah” when asked by Judge Zaidan if he understood what he had been charged with.

Addressing Mr Murphy, Mr Powderly said a bail application is listed for hearing in the High Court on Tuesday next.

The defendant was remanded in custody to December 10.

The judge advised the defendant that if he is granted bail in the meantime, he must attend court in person on that date.
