Rathangan GAA angry over 'illegal' player ruling by Kildare Co Board

Kildare GAA: delegates vote for status quo

Mick Mullen, Chairman of Kildare County Board

At the November meeting of the Kildare GAA grassroots, Rathangan GAA delegate Sean Murphy, also the club's Vice Chairman, was not a happy camper. He brought up a recent football final in which his club was informed, some days later, that the opposition, who won the game, had allegedly played an illegal player, who had played at a higher grade and also played under a false name.

This was brought to the attention of the Co. Board, but, as per rule, as it was after the 3-day time limit to appeal, the game could not be refixed.

Mr Murphy, said he understood the rule but insisted he wanted to know what the Co Board was going to do about it.
The match, according to rule, has been declared void, but the Rathangan delegate insisted that he was not happy the way the Co Board dealt with the situation from Day 1.

It is understood that the player involved has been handed a suspension but no action taken against his club.

Noel McKenna, Chair CCC, said his committee can only operate according to the rules while chairman Mick Mullen said that if Rathangan, or any club, want to see any rule change they can bring a motion forward to congress, but insisted again that any situation governed by rule, must be decided in accordance with the Rule Book.

It is understood that Rathangan remain very frustrated and intend to pursue the matter further.
