Kildare County Council has responded to a Newbridge-based political activist's call to scrap the Local Property Tax system (LPT).
The response was made in relation to a call which was made by Sinn Féin representative James Stokes, who on October 29 last called on Kildare County Council to abandon the current LPT system.
KCC's statement also follows shortly after Revenue informed the public that the deadline to file LPT returns is November 7, 2025.
When asked by the Leinster Leader for comment on Mr Stokes' suggestion, a representative of Kildare County Council replied: "The Minister for Finance [referring to Paschal Donohue TD] is responsible for LPT policy and legislation; and received cabinet approval to further amend the Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 (as amended), to allow for a revaluation of property values on November 1, 2025.
"Kildare County Council can confirm that the local variation of LPT for 2026 is +10 per cent, in line with recent years."
They also pointed out that the most recent vote on the matter took place at a full Kildare County Council meeting which was held on July 28 last.
During this meeting, 27 councillors voting in favour of the increase, 10 voted against it and two councillors abstained from voting on the matter.
The spokesperson concluded: "LPT forms part of the council’s revenue budget, supporting the delivery of essential services throughout County Kildare."
