After dominating the Kildare Intermediate Championship, winning each game by at least 10 points, Sallins will once again carry the weight of expectation with them into their provincial endeavours. They face Grange after the conclusion of the Carlow Championship over the weekend, following an initial replay after a 1-7 to 1-7 draw first time out, against Ballon.
Sallins will be seriously fancied when they face the Carlow champs at 3:15pm in Cedral St Conleth’s Park on Saturday, November 1, but they have received that load to bear because they are an outstanding team and an unbelievably strong Intermediate outfit. The Kildare champs will be hotly-tipped to get the job done on the opening day on local soil. Sallins are an adept side with defensive rigidity and direct attacking ability in spades and that combination will likely be key in these potentially tense encounters to come in Leinster should they progress.
In terms of their attacking output, on occasion, a club player is so outstanding that they are not discussed directly because of the obvious and implied nature of their influence. That player for Sallins is of course Colm Dalton, whether he is driving at players and creating scores or doing the dirty work to win turnovers, Dalton is the centrepiece of this great team.
In the same way the attack deserves its due, it would feel cruel not to highlight the back six who have built an outstanding platform for Sallins this year. The Kildare IFC champs have conceded just one goal (in their semi-final with Milltown) across their six championship outings. The Sallins six, inclusive of a forward thinking wing-back-line, move as a unit and deny space at every interval.
Key to this is both their discipline and indeed their patience, which was on full display in their county final display against Larries. That discipline on the biggest stage should serve them well when facing the best that Leinster have to offer at this level.
