A councillor called for Kildare County Council (KCC) to redesign a junction located in South Kildare.

Fianna Fil Cllr Mark Leigh made the call when he appeared by virtual means at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which took place on Monday, October 20 last.

Specifically, he motioned for KCC to redesign the Barrow Quay Junction, Athy, "by reducing the pedestrian area which had been taken up by a piece of infrastructure since removed, creating two lanes with a left and right filter lane."

His motion was seconded by Labour Party Cllr Aoife Breslin.

Elaborating on his motion, Cllr Dooley said that there is "a large piece of ground" in the area that "juts out".

"I would like to sit down [with KCC] and examine this area," he told KCC.

Cllr Breslin also agreed with his sentiments, adding: "This area needs an overall [renewed] approach."

Responding to his motion via the report it presented at the meeting, KCC said that it is "happy to consider this proposal in the context of the response to the motion above and other planned works in the town, to ensure that the optimal outcome is achieved for walkers, cyclists and all other road users."
