Kildare active travel scheme 'on track to be complete on schedule' – council

Kildare County Council has provided an update on works being undertaken on Mill Street, Maynooth, Co Kildare.

The council was responding to a question put forward by Social Democrats councillor, Peter Melrose, at this month's Clane Maynooth Municipal District meeting, held on Friday, October 3 2025, which called for an update and timeline for the works.

In a detailed report, the council outlined the Mill Street Active Travel Scheme – which will deliver public realm, public transport and active travel improvements between the Mill Street/Main Street junction and the Mill Street/Kilcock Road junction.

This, the council explained, is the last part in the Maynooth North/South Active Travel Corridor, and forms a vital link in the extremely busy pedestrian corridor between the train station and Maynooth University.

According to the local authority, to date, footpath improvements and a new cycle lane have been delivered on south eastern and south western sides of Mill Street; a new pedestrian bridge has been installed across the River Lyreen; and junction upgrades are ongoing at the Mill Street/Main Street junction.

Also, the council stated, ducting has been installed throughout the scheme to underground ESB cabling, and kerbing for a new cycle lane has been installed on the north western side of the scheme.

With regards to other works being carried out by the council, paving in front of Manor Mills Shopping Centre is to commence “before the end of September 2025” and is due to be completed “within two weeks.”

Resurfacing and re-lining works are scheduled to be completed before the end of October 2025.

The council confirmed that “the project is on track to be complete on schedule with substantial completion forecast for the end of 2025.”
