Transport and road safety loom large in North Kildare MD meeting

Transport and road safety concerns are to dominate an upcoming meeting of Kildare County Council's Clane Maynooth Municipal District, to be held on Friday, October 3 2025.

A motion by Cllr William Durkan (FG) will call on the council to conduct a traffic survey at Johnstown Bridge “to identify means of improving traffic management, and in the context of new housing developments in the town.

Cllr Peter Melrose (SD) is more concerned with the council undertaking a speed limit review on the R408 Newtown Road Maynooth (inbound), “from the 60km/h signage to the Maynooth Town Football Club entrance.”

Cllr Paul Ward (FF) has a motion calling on the council to undertake road resurfacing at Mill Lane and The Square, Kilcock, due to the poor state of repairs of the roads.

The issue of road safety at Dag Weld's Cross piques the interest of two local councillors. Cllr Paula Mulroe (SD) asks that the council outline “the immediate road safety measures that can be put in place” at the location, following recent incidents, while Cllr Brendan Wyse (FG) asks what works can be carried out at the location in the short-term.

Elsewhere, Cllr Tim Durkan asks if the council can confirm when the M4 bus corridor and resurfacing works from the Maynooth junction to the Celbridge/Leixlip interchange will be completed, and Cllr Peter Melrose (SD) asks for an update on works being undertaken on Mill Street, Maynooth.

On a different note entirely, Cllr Donna Phelan (FF) asks if work has commenced on developing a comprehensive tree policy in the municipal district, while Cllr Paul Ward similarly asks the council to detail the tree cutting list process for the municipal district.

Cllr Phelan also tables an important motion regarding Maynooth Garda Station. She argues that with the restoration of Buckley House and the two adjoining properties now complete, the Garda Station “stands in stark contrast”, “appearing run down and in need of attention”.

Cllr Phelan calls for an upgrade to the Garda Station to complement these works.

Cllr Angela Feeney (LAB) asks the council to support Maynooth Men's Shed in securing a new location in order to sustain its activities.

And finally, an MD meeting wouldn't be complete without a question on the much-mooted plans for a swimming pool for North Kildare, with Cllr Donna Phelan (FF) asking the council to provide an update on discussions with Maynooth University regarding the proposed swimming pool, along with the current status of negotiations.
