More money should be spent on speed ramps all over Kildare

More money should be invested in speed ramps across County Kildare.

A Kildare County Council meeting was told by Leixlip councillor Bernard Caldwell that the total spend should be doubled in 2026.

He said while the ramps can be unsightly in some cases they are the only effective deterrent to speeding.

He added that the issue had been going on for ten years and referenced the danger at a road outside a cemetery in Leixlip. He said that while it is not KCC policy to put down the ramps in some areas, the council “needs to change its mind.”

He was supported by Cllr Suzanne Doyle who said KCC’s funding  of €21,625 in each of the five municipal district areas for traffic calming is “paltry.”

Cllr Doyle said traffic calming is an issue because Kildare is “becoming more and more urbanised.”

KCC official Celina Barrett said the installation of traffic calming measures is done in accordance with guidelines and  several measures that must be considered “as part of

any traffic calming intervention.”

Ms Barrett said the amount spent on traffic calming across the county is “deemed  to be proportionate.”
