The Cathaoirleach of Clane Maynooth Municipal District has called on the council to prepare a plan, with costs, to upgrade the footpaths in Allen Cemetery, Co Kildare.

Cllr Brendan Wyse (FG) put forward his motion at a sitting of Clane Maynooth Municipal District on Friday, September 5 2025.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Wyse said he has visited Allen Cemetery “more than I used to”, and noticed the disrepair of footpaths in the cemetery.

This could be a hazard for funeral processions, he suggested, where people could trip on the ill-maintained footpath.

He wasn't aware how much footpath repairs would cost the council, he said, but suggested that if there were an estimate of costs then the council would have a view as to how best fund it.

Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (FF), also speaking at the meeting, asked that the council come back to councillors with an estimate of costs of footpath repairs.

“In fairness to Allen Cemetery”, he said, the graveyard is kept “impeccable” at all times, and credit must go to the caretaker who keeps the area “spotless at all times.”

However, he said, it was obvious that the footpaths were in need of repair.

A report issued by Kildare County Council stated that the Environment Department “will assess the work required and revert to the member with an estimated cost.”

However, the report stipulated: “Please note that there is no provision in the current budget to complete works.”
