A pilot project is the pipeline to improve a route for cyclists on a road in south Kildare.

At an Athy Municipal District meeting, Cllr Veralouise Behan asked Kildare County Council to mark out cycleways along the hard shoulder on the main road between Crookstown and Moone - similar to those  further south on the Carlow to Kilkenny road.

Cathaoirleach Ivan Keatley separately asked KCC to consult with the Moone/Timolin community before the start of the pilot project.

Cllr Ivan Keatley commented that the route is dangerous and said he knew the victim of a fatal accident on the route many years ago.

According to Kildare County Council, a civil engineering firm has been appointed to complete the pilot project and KCC will engage and update the local community on the scheme in advance of physical works commencing on the ground.

However, it is not possible to extend the scope of the scheme to Crookstown at present, but this can be considered subject to funding and following a review of this initial pilot project.
