Robbie Dolan, one of horse racing’s most celebrated jockeys and the winner, in 2024 aboard the 90-1 outsider, Knights Choice, of the prestigious Group 1 Lexus Melbourne Cup, is set to return to Ireland for a special visit to the iconic Curragh Racecourse, reconnecting with his Kildare upbringing and sharing his remarkable journey from local tracks to international stardom.
Born and raised in County Kildare, Robbie Dolan’s passion for horse racing was ignited in the heartland of Irish racing when, whilst mulling the possibility of an office job, a teacher suggested he consider the Racing Academy and Centre of Excellence (RACE) in Kildare Town. His early years around the lush green landscapes of the Curragh, steeped in centuries of equestrian tradition, shaped a career that would take him all the way to Australia’s most coveted racing prize, the Melbourne Cup.
Dolan's crowning achievement came when he clinched victory in the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s most iconic and famous race, securing his place among the elite in international horse racing. His success abroad is a testament to his dedication, skill, and deep connection to the sport’s heritage that began right here in Ireland.
Dolan's return to The Curragh is a full-circle moment, allowing him to reconnect with his roots and share his remarkable journey with the Irish racing community. His story serves as an inspiration to aspiring jockeys and a reminder of the enduring legacy of Irish horsemanship.
“We are thrilled to welcome Robbie back to the Curragh,” said Brian Kavanagh, Chief Executive, The Curragh Racecourse. “His journey from Kildare to Melbourne Cup winner is an incredible story of talent and determination, and we look forward to celebrating his achievements together.”
Robbie Dolan’s visit promises to be a highlight in the Irish racing calendar, offering fans and professionals alike a rare opportunity to meet one of the sport’s true champions on home soil.
“It has been incredible coming home to where it all began. It has been a life changing last twelve months and to be able to share the win of the Melbourne Cup with family and friends is what is all about,” said Dolan.
“There is a strong connection between Ireland and the Melbourne Cup, I feel honoured to be a part of that story.”
