Community worker Brian Crehan has been officially appointed as a Peace Commissioner by Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan.
A well-known figure in County Kildare for his community work, Brian expressed that he is "hugely honoured" by the appointment and described it as “a nice pat on the back” after many years of service to the local community.
Brian is actively involved in a wide range of community groups including Tír Na Móna Community Council, St. Mochua's Historical Society, Comhaltas Chill Dara, and Prosperous Community Council.
He is also a long-time volunteer with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Clane, contributing to the organisation and spirit of the event year after year.
Over the years, Brian has led and supported numerous local initiatives. Notably, he worked closely with Bord na Móna to ensure comprehensive fire safety plans for local boglands. He continues to campaign for improved public transport, particularly extended evening services on the 120 bus route, and remains a vocal advocate for accessibility and the rights of the disabled community in the region.
A musician and teacher by profession, Brian is a familiar face on the traditional music scene across Kildare. He regularly plays at sessions throughout the county and is also actively involved in Féile Liam O’Flynn — a music festival celebrating the legacy of his cousin and musical inspiration, the legendary Uilleann Piper Liam O’Flynn.
Speaking about his new role, Brian said: “I’m humbled to take on this position. It’s an honour to be trusted with this responsibility, and I look forward to serving the people of Kildare in any way I can.”
