Cllr Claire O’Rourke asked about the 30 km/h speed limit, which will apply  in urban areas.

She asked, at a Kildare County Council meeting when more information will be available about this.

KCC official Celina Barrett said the  Department of Transport is currently finalising an update of the “Guidelines for Setting and Managing Speed Limits in Ireland.”

Ms Barrett says this is mandatory guidance on the issue.

She also said changes will have to be authorised by government and it is expected that county councils “will amend speed limits in urban areas by way of special speed limit bye-laws.”

These will have to be voted upon by the councillors.

KCC will shortly commence a statutory public consultation process for amending the speed limits in urban housing estates, that are taken in charge. This is expected to start in July.

The meeting was also told that it is planned to address the issue of providing new signs in residential areas so that drivers will be aware of new limits.
