Members of An Garda Síochána (AGS) are investigating after a man had to be hospitalised following an assault on him which occurred in North Kildare.

Details of the incident were highlighted on KFM earlier today (July 16) by Garda John Joe O'Connell, who appeared as a guest on one of the station's regular programmes.

He told host Eoin Beatty that the assault was an unprovoked one, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, July 12 last on Convent Lane in Maynooth.

Specifically, Gda O'Connell said that the man was knocked to the ground by "two or more" other males and was punched repeatedly by them. This caused the injured party's face to bleed.

He also said that while gardaí are going over CCTV in relation to this crime, he would still urge anyone with any information about the assault to contact Maynooth Garda Station on 01 629 2380.
