Thousands of residents in Kildare had no access to water on the hottest day of the year, according to Social Democrats TD Aidan Farrelly.
Uisce Éireann (UÉ) said low water levels and high demand on the network forced it to take the decision to shut down the Allenwood reservoir on Saturday evening in order to replenish water levels overnight.
UÉ said customers in Coill Dubh, Prosperous, Derrinturn, Kilmeage, Robertstown and Allenwood were affected.
Saturday was the hottest day of the year with temperatures hovering around 29 or 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Kildare.
But North Kildare TD Farrelly strongly criticised Uisce Éireann and the government, saying that the time has come for major investment in the utility once and for all.
Mr Farrelly said: “This past weekend was challenging enough for families to make sure their children were hydrated, or businesses stay open without getting no notice of yet another water outage in Kildare. Farmers I’ve been speaking with have been frantically trying to source water for their animals. People are sick and tired of it now.
“Uisce Éireann appealed to people to conserve water in the run up to the hot weekend, which I appreciate. But it feels like it was inevitable that yet again the people of Prosperous, Allenwood, Robertstown, Kilmeague, Coill Dubh and surrounds would be switched off on Saturday afternoon. It's still not back for many as I speak on Sunday afternoon.
“The only notification some people received was a text message from the utility an hour after the water went out. That’s unacceptable. This is hard evidence that Uisce Éireann is flailing aimlessly in the face of its own crippled infrastructure, which is leading to disastrous consequences.
“I am concerned about the lack of forward planning and an abject failure from successive governments to invest in the necessary infrastructure to simply get by. Thousands of houses have been built in Kildare in recent years – our population has doubled since the early 1990’s and instead of providing, successive governments have buried their heads in the sand regarding infrastructure.
"It’s high time this government steps up to make sure we get what we deserve as a county. The National Development Plan is the ideal place for Kildare to be prioritised. Key infrastructural projects will be identified here – it is essential that we see government representatives securing essential capital investment for Kildare.”

A statement by Uisce Éireann on Sunday afternoon said: "Supply levels are returning to normal in North Kildare this morning after overnight disruptions caused by critically low water levels at the Allenwood Reservoir.

"Low water levels coupled with high demand on the network necessitated the shutting down of the reservoir on Saturday evening, in order to allow levels to replenish.

"The reservoir recharged successfully overnight and is now returning to normal operations.

"Customers in Coill Dubh, Prosperous, Derrinturn, Kilmeage, Robertstown, Allenwood and surrounding areas who were impacted should have their normal supplies restored this morning.

"Some customers may experience instances of low pressure while the network recharges but all supplies should be restored to normal levels by lunchtime today (Sunday)."

Uisce Éireann’s Eoghan Forristal thanked customers for their understanding while the reservoir was allowed to recharge.

“We understand the inconvenience of an unplanned outage and we thank customers for their support,” said Eoghan.

Uisce Éireann added: "Typically, it takes two to three hours for normal supply to restore to all customers affected by an unplanned outage. However, it may take longer for normal supply to be restored to customers at the end of the network or on higher ground as the system recharges.

"Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communications from us for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours. To register as a vulnerable customer or as an alternative contact, visit our Vulnerable Customers page.

"Uisce Éireann is committed to keeping customers informed across multiple platforms 24/7 and we encourage customers to engage with us through our website, X channels @IWCare and @IrishWater, on Facebook and LinkedIn and through our customer care helpline which is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278.
