Man who fled Kildare courthouse handed himself into the gardaí later

A man who fled Naas Courthouse after being brought there by the gardaí handed himself in afterwards, Naas District court was told.

The man was before the court on a charge of criminal damage, which occurred when the broke a camera off the wall of his partner’s property.

Sgt Mary Meade told the court that the man had been removed from the property the night before.

When he was subsequently brought to court "he left and made good his escape on foot.”

The court was also told that the man has a dozen previous convictions, including for mainly minor drug offences.

Defending solicitor Tim Kennelly said the man was accompanied to court on this occasion by his partner and she is supporting him.

He said the man's issues arise because he "can go down a road of alcohol.”

The man is working full time in construction and is living with his partner, who made the complaint against him.

He also said the man is apologetic to the gardai for absconding and he had been forgiven by his partner for causing the damage.

Mr Kennelly said he had handed himself in because “he had a crisis of conscience.”

Judge John Brennan noted that the man’s partner was present and they are back together. He also noted that the drug matters occurred a long time ago.

He was fined €500 for absconding and he applied the Probation Act for criminal damage.
