Kildare boy (13) drove 'recklessly' on e-scooter to avoid gardai at double speed limit

Gardai in Kildare spotted a 13-year-old boy travelling up to 50km/h on an e-scooter recently.

Gardai said the 13-year-old rider refused to stop when directed and drove recklessly in an attempt to avoid capture.

The boy was apprehended and will now be dealt with under the Juvenile Diversion Programme.

The escooter was seized and gardai have issued a warning to parents following the incident:

  • Do not buy e-scooters for children under 16 years old
  • E-scooters must not exceed 20 km/h
  • Must not be fitted with a saddle

E-scooters are not toys, gardai said, they are motorised vehicles and must be used responsibly.

Misuse can lead to serious injury and legal consequences, according to gardai.
