The Kildare footballers booked their quarter-final spot in the Tailteann Cup with a hard-earned four point win over Sligo at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park, Roscommon, on Sunday afternoon last.

It was a game that saw Kildare lead at one stage by no less than fifteen points but, Sligo, playing with the aid of a massive wind in the second half, cut that back to two but in the end The Lilies held out to win by four.

There were some fine performances from Kildare players but undoubtedly it was man-of-the match Daniel Flynn who shone brightest.

Having hit 2-4 against Tipperary two weeks ago, the Johnstownbridge maestro added 2-3 on Sunday in a display that saw him involved in many of Kildare scores on the day.

It was a game dominated by the conditions but as Flynn said after the final whistle, “it was a tough game, dominated, of course, by the wind but we played well, we worked very hard and it is great now to get to the quarter-final, a week's rest and then off we go again.”

Asked about his goals, the no. 14 said “it's all about winning, all about getting the scores on the board, we hit a great total today but so did Sligo in fairness, but we can now look forward to the quarters and hopefully we can then progress even further” adding “but there is nothing easy in this competition, nothing easy at all.”
