Kildare County Council (KCC) has revealed the number of housing units in Athy which have been granted planning permission since January 2023.

The query was made by Fianna Fáil councillor Brian Dooley at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which took place on Monday, May 19 last.

Specifically, at the meeting, Kildare County Council took together two questions from Cllr Dooley together: "can the council outline how many new builds have been granted permission in the town of Athy to include both private and Approved Housing Bodies (AHB) approved projects, since January 2023 to date?" and "can the council confirm how many new builds granted permission in the town of Athy since January 2023 to include both private and AHB approved projects are in construction?"

In response to the first question, Kildare County Council provided a table with relevant information.

The total housing units permitted 2025 to date was listed as 5; the figure for 2024 was 189; and the figure for 2023 was 37 — a total of 229 units.

As for the second question, Kildare County Council similarly provided another table with relevant information.

It noted that the total housing units permitted in 2025 and under construction was 0; the figure for 2024 was 182; and the figure for 2023 was "0 under construction at present (Note 1 commencement
notice received for 1 unit)" — a total of 182 units.
