Kildare County Council was asked to outline the powers it has in relation to the movement of caravans on council-owned land in the Athy Municipal District.
The question was asked by Labour Party councillor Mark Leigh at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which was held on Monday, May 19 last.
Responding to his query, Kildare County Council said that its housing department investigates "all such matters" and issues statutory warning notices to the occupiers under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948 (48-hour and follow up 24-hour notices).
"The assistance of the council’s Homeless and Social Work Teams is offered to occupants. In most cases, the occupants will engage and relevant supports are provided."
Kildare County Council added: "Where the caravan is not removed within the stated period, the case may be referred to Kildare County Council’s solicitor for legal enforcement. This will include the issue of a warning letter and court injunction action progressed."
Following this, Cllr Leigh told Kildare County Council that he was happy with its response to his query.
