A "number of near misses" involving children on a road has been brought to the attention of Kildare County Council (KCC).

Social Democrats councillor Paula Mulroe raised the matter at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting on Friday, May 2 last.

While in attendance at the meeting, she motioned for KCC to install a raised zebra crossing "for vulnerable road users at the roundabout on the Clane Relief Road adjacent to Alexandra Park in Clane".

Her motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy.

She stressed to KCC that there had been "a number of near misses" involving children on this road.

In response, KCC told Cllr Mulroe via its report at the meeting: "Existing roundabouts, by their very nature and layout, are challenging and expensive to amend when retrofitting pedestrian facilities.

"There have been a number of requests for signalised crossings along the Clane Relief Road in recent years and also concerns about the speed of traffic along the route."

"In addition, KCC is aware that significant changes to the layout may displace traffic onto Main Street, which is highly undesirable."

KCC concluded: "The function, use and layout of the Relief Road can be examined in the context of Public Realm upgrades to Main Street — however, it would not be prudent to examine one location in isolation to the needs of the wider community and area."
