The public lighting network across the county uses up more than half (51%) of Kildare County Council’s energy demand.
The network is made up of 24,000 lights which have to be managed and maintained.

And this is expected to cost nearly €4.28m this year.
Requests for new lights in various locations are assessed in accordance with a KCC priority schedule.
A survey of the lights with the aim of achieving energy efficiencies was completed in 2024 and the retro fitting of more energy efficient LED lanterns started last year and this work will continue throughout 2025. LED lanterns don't need as much energy and the council expects that these will result in a significant reduction in energy demand and associated carbon emissions.
