Social Democrats Councillor Pat Balfe has urged that while the new fire station in Maynooth, Co Kildare is being advanced as a priority, it is essential that Monasterevin's fire station receives a full upgrade within this term.
Councillor Balfe, who represents Monasterevin, said: “There is no doubt that the new fire station in Maynooth is an important development, with significant funding already allocated. However, our community in Monasterevin has long been calling for the upgrade of our fire station. We need to ensure that Monasterevin is not overlooked in favour of other priorities.
“The Capital Plan for 2026–2030 is intended to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose facilities that meet today’s needs. I am calling on the Department for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to give urgent priority to Monasterevin’s upgrade, ensuring that practical work takes place during this term.
“The information behind these plans comes from a written reply to a Parliamentary Question – submitted on my behalf by Aidan Farrelly TD – which clearly confirms the current prioritisation. While Maynooth has secured €4.4 million under the 2021–2025 Fire Services Capital Programme, our community’s needs have been earmarked for a later funding cycle. This is a matter we cannot afford to delay.”
The official documents indicate that Monasterevin’s upgrade is scheduled as a priority infrastructural project for the Capital Plan for 2026–2030.
Councillor Balfe emphasised that the existing robust processes, including assessments, detailed design, and cost planning, must translate into tangible improvements for local safety, not just aspirations on paper.
“We understand that a rigorous process is necessary to ensure that projects are safe, cost-effective, and sustainable. Nonetheless, it is vital that these procedures work in our favour and result in timely upgrades for Monasterevin. Our residents deserve the reassurance of having a modern, well-equipped fire station that meets the demands of our growing community.”
Councillor Balfe concluded: “I remain committed to working closely with the Department and my colleagues on Kildare County Council to ensure Monasterevin’s upgrade is delivered within this term. It is a matter of local safety and community confidence that we see action, not just promises.”
