Garda Shane Gibbons told of arresting the man at an address in Dublin and he made no reply when charged.
Gda Gibbons said it will be alleged he made the call and produced the knife and said he would kill her if she did not return to north Africa. The incident reportedly occurred on a date unknown in mid-February.
The court was also told that the defendant lives in a direct provision centre.
Judge Desmond Zaidan adjourned the matter to July 3 and he told the defendant to stay out of a named town in County Kildare.
The judge also said he would certify for a translator for a future hearing. The ex partner was not present for the hearing.
The case was adjourned for directions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to July 3.
