An awareness event which will shed light on an invasive plant species is due to take place in Newbridge next week.

Newbridge Tidy Towns Association (NTTA) will be hosting the event in Ryston Sports and Social Club.

Explaining the nature of the event, NTTA said that Himalayan Balsam is an invasive species which is taking hold along riverbanks and other watercourses, including the River Liffey.

"It causes a number of concerning issues such as degradation of the bank and elimination of native wild species," NTTA added.

As a result, the group will discuss with attendees on the night about how they can  support the eradication of Himalayan Balsam in the Newbridge area.

"lease come along especially if you live in one of the estates along the riverbank or if you would like to join us on some upcoming balsam bashing events," NTAA continued." We'll be joined on the night by representatives from Ballymore Eustace, where the community are leading this work, the Local Authorities Water Programme and Kildare County Council Biodiversity team."

Those interested in attending can find the event on Facebook.

NTTA's talk will take place on Monday, March 31 from 7.30pm to 9pm.
