There is an "element of potential danger" for users of one County Kildare car park.

That's according to one councillor who represents the Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District (MD).

Fianna Fáil Cllr David Trost made the comments when he appeared at the latest MD meeting, which took place on Friday, March 21 last.

He submitted the following motion: "That the council review signage and other measures in council-managed car parks in Celbridge, such as the use of CCTV, to ensure the public are aware that use of car parks is at the user’s risk, and to deter crime and protect public safety."

This motion was seconded by Cllr Trost's party colleague and Cathaoirleach of the MD, Bernard Caldwell.

Cllr Trost claimed that there had been reports of people having property damaged and even being physically attacked in one KCC-leased car park.

Simon Wallace, a KCC official, told the Cllrs that discussions between this particular site's landowner and KCC are ongoing at present in an effort to address the issue.

Celina Barrett, another KCC official, also said that the CCTV aspect of Cllr Trost's motion was "a legal complexity", and added that KCC's "only [viable] avenue is engaging with the landowner".

"An Garda Síochána is aware of the [disruptive] activity in the car park," she said.

Cllr Trost suggested to KCC that it may have to consider temporaily closing the car park — "Although I do not think it would come to that," he added.
