Locals invited to give feedback at public meetings on proposed Kilberry Wind Farm in Kildare

A series of public consultations will be held for members of the local community by Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables regarding the proposed Kilberry Wind Farm

The proposed wind farm, which was announced last year, is to be located on Bord na Móna’s landbank across Kilberry Bog in Kildare. The development by Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables is one of the largest onshore renewables joint ventures in the history of the state.

The development of the wind farm, if fully delivered, will generate up to 800MW of renewable energy which would be enough to be capable of powering the average annual energy demand of around half a million homes annually. This would displace up to half a million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Public consultations are to be held in Newtownbert, Nurney and Narraghmore in order to offer members of the public a chance to engage with the project team and provide any feedback on the wind farm.

Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables have appointed a Community Engagement and Stakeholder Team, including a dedicated Community Liaison Officer, to work with the local community on the development. The team will be present at the upcoming meetings to gather feedback from the public and address any questions.

The first meeting will be held Rheban GAA Club in Newtownbert, Athy on Tuesday, 11 March between 5pm and 8.30pm.

Then another will be held at Nurney GAA Club in Walterstown on Wednesday, 12 March from 5pm to 8.30pm.

The third meeting will take place at Saint Laurence's GAA Club in Narraghmore on Thursday, 13 March between 5pm and 8.30pm.

Bord na Móna and SSE Renewables plan on developing a draft layout for the wind farm project in the coming months. More community based consultations will be held to gather more sights from locals before a planning application will be submitted in 2026.

Declan Byrne, Development Project Manager from SSE Renewables, said: "We are eager to meet with the local community to introduce our plans on the proposed Kilberry Wind Farm and receive feedback. This joint venture project would bring investment and a range of long-term benefits to the area and support the local community who are key stakeholders in the project.

"If delivered, the project would also have a dedicated Community Benefit Fund, something both SSE Renewables and Bord na Móna are proud to have been delivering at our operational sites for many years. We look forward to meeting the local community and getting their feedback on our early-stage plans."
