The Irish National Stud and Gardens has announced the newest addition to its renowned Living Legends paddock. From Monday, March 10, visitors will have the opportunity to meet and greet some of Ireland’s most accomplished racehorses in Kildare, including their latest inductee, Sizing John.
The arrival of Sizing John marks a special moment for racing fans, as he joins an elite lineup of multiple Grade 1-winning champions, including Hurricane Fly, Faugheen and Beef or Salmon. The timing of his introduction is particularly fitting, coinciding with the start of the Cheltenham Festival, where he famously secured victory in the 2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
A National Hunt Star
A British-bred and Irish-trained National Hunt legend, Sizing John had an illustrious career highlighted by a remarkable treble in 2017, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Punchestown Gold Cup, and Irish Gold Cup. Under the expert training of Jessica Harrington, he proved himself to be a formidable force on the track. His career spanned 21 races, with 9 wins, including 5 Grade 1 victories, amassing an impressive €943,839 in earnings.
Following his retirement from racing in September 2020, Sizing John embarked on a successful second career in the Showing Ring with Kate Harrington. In 2023, he further cemented his legacy by claiming victory in the prestigious Racehorse to Riding Horse Class at the RDS, triumphing over other racing greats such as Douvan and Woodland Opera.
A Champion’s Retirement
Now enjoying his well-earned retirement, Sizing John has settled in seamlessly at the Irish National Stud, joining his fellow equine legends. Known for his friendly nature and love of attention, he is already a favourite among the staff at the Irish National Stud.
In a fun revelation, it turns out that his favourite song is Katy Perry’s “Roar” – a fitting anthem for a champion who roared to victory on the biggest stage.
CEO of the Irish National Stud and Gardens Cathal Beale said, "We were delighted to have Sizing John join us in the last few weeks. He's a real character and such a gentle giant that we know he'll be really popular with the public.”
